The chemical composition of the plant varies depending on the latitude where the plant occurs. About 35 active substances have been identified so far. The main active compounds are withanolides: steroid lactones and alkaloids. The group of alkaloids includes vitamins, somniferins, tropines, somniferynins, somnines, pseudowithanines, withananines, pseudotropines, cuscohygrine, choline, isopeletierine and anaferine. Steroid lactones (withanolides) are naturally occurring derivatives of ergostane, including withaferin A, withanolides A-Y, withadomniferin A, withanone, withasomidienone and withasomniferols A-C. Another group of compounds is flavonoids (3-O-rutinoside 6,8-dihydroxy kaempferol, quercetin, and its 3-O-rutinoside-7-O-glucoside), saponins, coumarins (scopoletin), chlorogenic acid, nitrogenous compounds (withanol, somnitol). In addition, the presence of β-sitosterol, acylated sterol glycosides, glycowithanolides, carbohydrates, resins, lipids, and fatty acids was confirmed.

Ashwagandha has several beneficial therapeutic effects. The medicinal raw material is the root, which is known for its ability to strengthen the body’s defense mechanisms and counteract the aging process. It is recommended in situations of excessive fatigue and stress. It can be used in anxiety and depression, in periods of general weakness, and in memory and concentration disorders. The leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruits can also be used for medicinal purposes. The plant complements anticancer therapy and supports the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s diseases). The raw material is used as a means of regulating lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. It is recommended for diseases of the musculoskeletal system and to improve the functioning of the pancreas and kidneys. The plant’s influence on the endocrine system indicates the possibility of its use in the treatment of infertility, libido disorders, and alleviation of menstrual pain and menopausal symptoms. Traditional uses include the treatment of goiter, ulcers, and insomnia. In cosmetics, it is an ingredient of, among others: face creams, shampoos, and conditioners with nourishing, cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-aging properties.
